Liposuction of the arms
( Brachioplasty )

Dr. Massimo Gianfermi is a leading specialist in the field of cosmetic surgery and arm liposuction.

Liposuction alone or in combination with dermolipectomy (arm lift) is a widely used technique for aesthetic improvement of the arms.

What is the principle of liposuction of the arms?

Liposuction is the destruction and aspiration of fat cells from the deep layer of subcutaneous fat.

Only the deep fat is suctioned to avoid leaving visible traces on the skin (furrows, deformations…).

After liposuction, the skin must be tightened to compensate for the subcutaneous void left by the liposuction.

Not all the fat cells aspirated are replaced, even during weight gain (which is not recommended). The result, if the weight remains stable, is durable over time.

Details of a brachioplasty

Brachioplasty is a true arm lift as its name suggests. It is the only possible treatment for excess skin on the arms. Arm liposuction alone does not allow for retraction of this skin, but it does allow, in association with the arm lift, to decrease the perimeter of the arm.

What are the indications for liposuction of the arms?

This surgical procedure is indicated when there is significant excess skin.

The arm lift consists of removing excess skin and re-tensioning the remaining healthy skin through an incision scar located on the inner side of the arm, resulting in more contoured arms, smoother and tighter skin.

What happens during the consultation before liposuction of the arms?

Two consultations are necessary before scheduling liposuction of the arms.

During the first consultation, the surgeon evaluates the areas to be treated, the measurements (measurement of the circumference of the arm at the strongest point), the quality of the skin and the absence of the need to combine another surgical procedure (dermolipectomy).

After having given you all the explanations about arms liposuction, Dr. Gianfermi will give you a document summarizing the important points to remember as well as an estimate.

The second consultation, after a 15-day reflection period, is an opportunity for you to ask questions and give your consent for the procedure. It is important to take pre-operative photos that will be useful during the one-year check-up to objectively see the improvement obtained.

With your agreement, an operation can be scheduled. You will then need to make an appointment for an anesthesia consultation.

Concerns

Before an intervention

  • Two pre-operative consultations with a plastic surgeon are required before this arm surgery, as well as a consultation with an anesthesiologist.
  • Preoperative photographs of the arms will be taken.
  • A compression garment such as a sleeve will be prescribed.
  • The pre-operative instructions for all arm surgery are as follows:
  • Stop smoking at least 1 month before and 1 month after surgery to reduce the risk of necrosis and complications.
  • Stop all anticoagulant or antiaggregant treatment 15 days before.

Questions fréquentes

In case of significant weight variation only.

Immediately after the procedure, an insensitivity or hyposensitivity is present on the inner side of the arm. But this sensation disappears within a year after the operation.

Liposuction of the arms is rare, because if there is an indication for a brachioplasty, it is because there is an associated excess of skin.
